Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about using Online Exams — whether you're a student taking an exam, a lecturer creating one, or an admin managing your institution.

For Students

Sign in with the credentials provided by your institution (email and password). Once logged in, your student dashboard shows all upcoming, active, and past exams. Click on an active exam to begin.

Your answers are saved periodically as you progress. If you reconnect before the exam time expires, you can continue where you left off. If the timer runs out while you're disconnected, your most recently saved answers are submitted automatically.

Yes. You can navigate freely between questions during the exam. You can also flag questions for review and come back to them before you submit.

After submission, you'll see a confirmation screen with a submission timestamp. You can also check the status of your submissions on your student dashboard.

Results are available as soon as your instructor releases them. Auto-graded questions (like multiple choice) are scored instantly, but your instructor may review essay-type answers manually before publishing final marks.

Exams can include multiple choice, true/false, short answer, and essay questions. The exact types depend on what your lecturer has configured for each assessment.

The platform is designed for desktops, laptops, and tablets. While it may work on mobile browsers, we recommend using a device with a larger screen for the best exam experience, especially if your exam has security restrictions enabled.

Security & Integrity

The platform supports multiple security layers including browser lockdown mode (which prevents tab switching), copy-paste prevention, question randomisation, answer shuffling, and real-time security violation detection. Lecturers can enable or disable these features per exam.

If browser lockdown is enabled, switching tabs or windows is logged as a security violation. Your instructor can see these events. Repeated violations may be flagged. Always stay in the exam window until you've submitted.

Yes. All data is transmitted over encrypted connections (HTTPS). Exam submissions are securely stored, and access is restricted by role-based permissions. Only authorised staff at your institution can view your answers and results.

No. Each student can only see their own exam, answers, and results. Student data is fully isolated — there's no way for one student to access another's submission.

For Lecturers & Admins

From your lecturer dashboard, navigate to your course, then click 'Create Exam'. You can add questions from your question bank or create new ones. Set the time limit, schedule the exam window, configure security settings, and publish when ready.

A question bank is a reusable library of questions organised by course, topic, category, and difficulty level. You can build your bank over time and quickly assemble new exams by selecting from existing questions.

Yes. Objective questions (MCQ, true/false) are auto-graded, but essay and short-answer questions can be reviewed and scored manually. You can also add written feedback to individual answers.

School admins can create courses, assign them to departments and programs, and manage student enrolments. Students are enrolled in courses, and any exam published under that course is visible to enrolled students.

Yes. The platform provides real-time monitoring where you can see each student's progress, time remaining, and whether they're actively writing, idle, or have submitted.

There are four roles: Super Admin (platform-wide access), School Admin (manages a single institution), Lecturer (manages courses, exams, and grades), and Student (takes exams and views results). Each role has a tailored dashboard.

Exam Timing & Scheduling

The countdown timer is synced with the server, not your local device clock. This prevents manipulation. When the timer reaches zero, your exam is automatically submitted with whatever answers you've provided.

No. Once an exam starts, the timer runs continuously until you submit or time expires. This ensures fairness for all students taking the same assessment.

You can submit your exam at any time before the timer expires. Once submitted, you cannot go back and change your answers.

Lecturers can schedule an exam to be available within a specific time window (e.g., Monday 9 AM to Monday 11 AM). You can only start the exam during this window. The duration of the exam itself is separate from the availability window.

Results & Grading

For objective question types (multiple choice, true/false), the platform compares your answer against the correct answer set by the lecturer and assigns marks instantly upon submission.

Yes. Lecturers have full control over grades and can adjust auto-graded scores if needed before releasing results to students.

All your past results are available on your student dashboard under 'Past Exams'. You can see your score, the correct answers (if the lecturer allows), and any feedback provided.

Online Exams works on the latest versions of Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge. We recommend keeping your browser updated for the best experience, especially when security features are enabled.

There is no dedicated mobile app at this time. The platform is a web application accessible through any modern browser. For the best exam-taking experience, we recommend using a desktop or laptop.
